Education and training of medical physicists will be discussed. The goals of education and training programs in medical physics and the responsibilities of medical physicists will be presented. The official definition of “qualified medical physicist” by AAPM (American Association of Physicists in Medicine) and EFOMP (European Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics) will be reviewed. The current state of recognition of (or lack of) medical physics profession by USA government, European Union (EU), and the International Labor Organization (ILO) will be presented. Lastly the rational for certification of medical physicists by the scientific associations and maintenance of certification (MOC) are briefly stated.
